As part of the ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail, Kaluuya’s statue will bring to life the intense “Sunken Place” moment from the Oscar®-winning film that became a cultural sensation back in 2017.
Voted by 5,000 British film fans as the actor they most wanted to see in the trail, Kaluuya’s inclusion marks a huge milestone for homegrown talent. Get Out earned four Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Kaluuya himself. It also won the Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay! With a budget that was relatively small, the film shocked everyone by grossing over $250 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing debut film based on an original script in Hollywood history.
Now, Kaluuya will be joining other cinematic legends like Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, and Batman in the Square. His journey from early roles in Skins and Black Mirror to global stardom is truly inspiring.
The statue recreates the chilling scene from ‘Get Out’ where Chris, played by Kaluuya, is hypnotised into a trance, spiralling into a symbolic void—a powerful metaphor that resonated deeply with audiences. The performance helped launch Kaluuya’s career, earning him an Academy Award nomination and leading to roles in Black Panther and Judas and the Black Messiah.
Prepare to witness an iconic moment from modern cinema immortalised in London’s heart of film and entertainment, Leicester Square.
