Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol statue to be unveiled in Leicester Square
Get ready for an Indian cinema moment in the heart of London! This spring, Leicester Square Gardens will welcome a brand new addition to the beloved Scenes in the Square trail – a bronze statue of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in a scene from the timeless Indian cinema classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ).
Marking the film’s 30th anniversary, this will be the first statue in the UK to honour Indian cinema, celebrating the longest-running Hindi film of all time.
The statue captures a scene from DDLJ’s iconic opening sequence, which was partly filmed in the heart of Leicester Square. It will be located outside the Odeon Luxe, joining the likes of Harry Potter, Paddington, Mary Poppins, and Batman in this ever-growing celebration of movie magic.
Launched in 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge became a global box-office hit, beloved by the British South Asian community and fans worldwide. Still playing in cinemas nearly 30 years later, DDLJ continues to inspire audiences with its sweeping romance and memorable music.
The film follows Raj and Simran, two young non-resident Indians, on a love-filled journey across Europe and India – including a moment in Leicester Square where they pass by each other for the first time, unknowingly sparking a love story for the ages.
With over 140 million followers and a career spanning 80+ films, Shah Rukh Khan – widely known as the “King of Bollywood” – stars opposite Kajol, his frequent co-star and one of Indian cinema’s most cherished leading ladies.
For fans of Indian cinema and curious passers-by, this is a must-see moment in London's West End.
