What’s more important, art or life? Ralph Fiennes and Miranda Raison star in the West End transfer of David Hare’s Grace Pervades play, following an acclaimed world premiere at Theatre Royal Bath. This powerful historical drama explores the lives, legacies and loves of the great Victorian actors Sir Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, whose partnership transformed British theatre. It opened in Bath in summer 2025 to critical acclaim and now comes to the Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited run. Make sure you book early for this “fascinating, absorbing and very funny” (Financial Times) play.

Titled after a scathing review of a performance of Terry’s, in which a critic sneered that “grace pervades the hussy” and derided her children born out of wedlock, Grace Pervades reclaims and reimagines that story with biting wit and emotional honesty.

Set in the late nineteenth century, Hare’s sweeping drama traces the glory days of the Lyceum Theatre, where Irving’s visionary showmanship and Terry’s brilliance made them household names. Behind the triumphs, however, is a tale of artistic obsession, personal sacrifice, and the unrelenting pressure of fame. For Irving, the art was everything, but for Terry it was just part of a full – and at times controversial – life.

Ralph Fiennes (Conclave, The English Patient) stars as Henry Irving, capturing both his grandeur and vulnerability, while Miranda Raison (Spooks, Patriots) embodies Terry with warmth, wit and emotional depth. Their partnership on stage anchors a play that celebrates artistry while confronting its costs.

The production features a world-class creative team: Olivier Award-winning playwright David Hare (Pravda, Skylight, Teeth ‘n’ Smiles) and three-time Olivier winning director Jeremy Herrin (People Places and Things) lead the company, with set design by Bob Crowley, costumes by Fotini Dimou, lighting by Peter Mumford, sound by Elizabeth Purnell, music by Paul Englishby, and movement direction by Lucy Cullingford. Together they conjure a sumptuous world of Victorian theatre.

A witty, tender and beautifully written portrait of ambition, love and legacy, the unmissable Grace Pervades play is a “love letter to theatre” (The Guardian) that’s perfect for anyone who adores the thrill of live drama. Book now to be in the audience for this unmissable West End transfer
