Harold Fry is an ordinary man whose life is turned upside down when he plans to post a letter to a dying friend… and finds himself on a spontaneous, cross-country pilgrimage from his home in Devon all the way to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Along the way, he meets a tapestry of strangers, moments of unexpected grace, and reminders of lost chances. At home, his wife Maureen navigates her own emotional path as she waits for him to return.
Rachel Joyce adapts her own book for the stage in The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry musical. Since its publication in 2012, it has been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and adapted into a heartwarming film starring Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton. With relatable characters and a touching story that spans the length and breadth of the country, it’s the perfect material for a new British musical.
Katy Rudd (Ballet Shoes, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) directs, and chart-topping indie act Passenger delivers “a ravishing score” (The Times). The team transfer from the show’s world premiere in Chichester, which critics raved about – In Common even said “If this doesn’t get a West End transfer then there is no justice in the world. It is that good”!
Mark Addy, known for his roles in The Full Monty, Game of Thrones, and The Rig, brings warmth, gentle humour, and depth to the role of Harold. Opposite him, Jenna Russell, whose credits include Sunday in the Park with George and Hello, Dolly!, plays Maureen with fierce vulnerability and emotional truth.
Intimate yet expansive, heartfelt yet hopeful, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry musical is a joyful reminder that it’s never too late to begin again. Secure your place on Harold’s journey with tickets for the limited London run – this unforgettable production is a pilgrimage well worth taking.
